Spotlight on: Quizlet

This spotlight is meant to bring exposure to one of my all-time favorite tools.  It's not new, it's not sexy, and it's not going to blow your technology doors off.  It's simply a digital take on one of education's oldest past times: making and studying flash cards.  Since its inception, Quizlet has expanded to offerings of practice tests, study games, etc., and these have only made Quizlet more effective and valuable to students.  So for all you teachers out there, I highly recommend that you highly recommend Quizlet to your students.

Quizlet is an online learning platform where students and teachers create and use interactive study tools, such as digital flashcards, practice tests, and study games, to learn and master new information. Users can create their own study sets, find existing ones, and engage with the material through various modes, including matching games and live quizzes, to prepare for exams, learn a new language, or study any subject.

Key features and uses:

Interactive Study Tools:

Quizlet offers various ways to study, including digital flashcards, practice tests, and engaging games like "Match" for competition and "Learn" for active learning.

Study Set Creation:

Users can create their own "study sets" of terms and definitions, or they can find and use pre-made sets created by others, including curriculum publishers and educational institutions.

Multiple Learning Modes:

Beyond basic flashcards, Quizlet allows users to choose different study modes, making the learning experience dynamic and responsive to their needs.

Cross-Platform Accessibility:

Available as a web tool and mobile app, users can study on the go, making it convenient for students at any grade level.

Teacher and Student Use:

Teachers can create study sets for their students, and students can use the platform to review material and prepare for tests.

Customization and Engagement:

The platform supports various media, including text, images, and audio, allowing for more engaging and comprehensive study materials.

Book Tour: "The Google Infused Classroom" by Holly Clark & Tanya Avrith

The Google Infused Classroom: A Guidebook to Making Thinking Visible and Amplifying Student Voice is a book by Holly Clark and Tanya Avrith that provides educators with practical strategies for using Google tools and other online resources to enhance student engagement and learning. The book focuses on making student thinking visible, empowering students to share their work with authentic audiences, and preparing them for the future by integrating technology with sound pedagogy. It offers instructions for using 20 essential Google-friendly tools and includes a bonus section on digital portfolios.

Key Aspects of the Book

Focus on Pedagogy:

The book emphasizes integrating technology with effective teaching methods, rather than just focusing on the tools themselves.

Making Thinking Visible:

It provides strategies for using technology to help students demonstrate their thought processes and understanding.

Amplifying Student Voice:

The book teaches educators how to give students opportunities to share their work with real-world audiences.

Practical and Actionable:

It offers concrete examples and instructions for incorporating specific Google tools into daily lessons.

Empowering Educators:

The book is designed for teachers at all levels of experience with Google tools, from beginners to those looking to refine their practice.

Aside from the above, why am I recommending this book?  This book was the inspiration for this blog.  It has lots of examples of technology tools, along with explanations and tips for how to use them, that are ripe for educators to introduce to their classrooms today.  There's something for everyone in this book, but it's definitely an invaluable resource for any teacher not already immersed in technology and the latest educational technology trends that is looking to catch up quickly.

Socrative is an educational technology platform and student response system that allows teachers to conduct real-time formative and summative assessments, quizzes, and polls to gauge student understanding. Students use any web-enabled device, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer, to participate in activities like multiple-choice questions, short answers, and team-based games, with teachers receiving immediate data and reports on student performance.

Key features and functions:

Quizzes and Polls: Socrative supports various question types, including multiple-choice, true/false, and short-answer questions, allowing for comprehensive assessments.

Real-Time Feedback: Teachers get immediate visual feedback and reports on student responses, which helps them adjust their teaching and provide support where needed.

Accessibility: The platform is accessible via web browsers and has dedicated apps for iOS, Android, and Chrome devices.

Differentiated Activities: Teachers can create individualized quizzes, or have students work in groups or as a whole class.

How it works:

  1. Teachers: log in to create and launch activities like quizzes or polls.
  2. Students: join a "room" by entering a unique room name provided by the teacher on their own devices.
  3. Students: respond to questions, which are displayed in real-time to the teacher.
  4. Teachers: can then see results and use the information to monitor progress and guide instruction.

Bottom Line at the Bottom!!!

Price is always the bottom line, at least for me.  Here's what Socrative has to offer (as of 30 August 2025):

First Things First: The Many Categories of Educational Technology Tools

When you hear "Educational Technology Tool," what comes to mind?  This term sounds fairly straightforward (which it is), but not very specific (which it definitely is not).  This is because "Educational Technology Tool" is a far-reaching umbrella term.

So let's take a look.  Below is a modest attempt at a breakdown, with some great examples, of the many categories of Educational Technology Tools:

  • Learning Management Systems (LMS):

Platforms like Canvas and Moodle organize courses, assignments, and student progress.

  • Interactive Content & Presentations:

Tools such as Nearpod, Pear Deck, and Prezi allow for dynamic, multimedia-rich presentations with interactive elements and real-time feedback.

  • Assessment & Feedback:

Kahoot!, Wayground (formerly "Quizizz), and Socrative provide tools for quizzes, games, and real-time feedback to gauge student understanding.

Collaboration & Communication:

Platforms like Padlet, Microsoft Teams, and Slack enable students to collaborate on projects, brainstorm ideas, and communicate effectively.

  • Content Creation & Curation:

Tools like Wakelet and Canva help educators and students curate, organize, and share digital content.

  • Productivity & Writing Assistance:

Grammarly aids in writing and grammar, while tools like Evernote support note-taking for both students and teachers.

  • Specialized Tools:

Duolingo is for language learning, while Turnitin is used for plagiarism checking in higher education.

...and many more options within each of these categories!  What about you?  Do you have any other categories with which you are familiar?  What about your favorite (or least favorite?!) tools?  Let's talk about it in the comments section.
